Roger (Crisp) and Robin...already or soon to become another couple to tie the knot!! Yes it was all happening around then..& a lot of the old frienships went in different directions as many were getting marrried.....also took a trip to Gisborne with Rog in the summer of '71 & i remember playing 'Maggie May' by Rod Stewart all the way..Ha!

Stent rd...New Plymouth ..NZ champs 1971 whoohoo..'top surfers'like Roger Crisp....hey Rog..you never even got out of your heat..Ha!....even tho Wayne was still number one...he never competed in this years comp...but he did venture out at Kumara Patch after the finals..& just blitzed every one

wayne in his 'blitzing mood'....NZ champs 1971 short stubby fat boards were happening bigtime in '71...twin fins ..swallow tails and square backs were the rage....

another item at our wedding 'Dak' McDonald and Noeline Bowmar.... now Dak knew how to grow a reeeal mustache!!...Ha!...Dak..surfing real good about now...

and Billy Carson always had a nice looking girl on his shoulder!!...ha! again...at our wedding January '71

Billy Carson was a very smooth surfer...kept really nice straight fast lines...nice to watch!... But it always seem to me that these were the most unlikely guys to hook up together in business...Gary and Billy both had a touch of intensity about them...but in saying that...they were also very progressive!!........good blokes too!!

'Gant' wins the NZ titles in '72...in Gisborne.. NZ president Mike Court handing out the trophy...with Peter Fitzsimmons looking on......Gant had that classic flowing style of surfing that always looked so smooth......another that left us to early!!...

Takapuna boy Steve Wheeler and Marion Erceg Steve had an older brother (Lyall Wheeler) who was a very cool guy from the Auckland surf scene......and the handsome Mr. Nigel Boyd on the right (he paid me $100 to say that...ha!)

and Sheldon (Wordsworth) can scrub up pretty good too..... Sheldon & Margaret (Pou)...with the very smooth Trevor King as best man!.(on right) looking like a Mr Engelbert Humpadink with those long side-levers...ha!......also Howard Mansfield ..Michelle Wordsworth...& looks like Margarets sister as well!!..

and of course...the power surfing mystro himself...Colin Lowe Great shot of Colin on a fairly sizable wave!...this photo shows the aggressive nature of Colins surfing....definitely one of the best surfers in the country at this time!!

1971...the year of 'The Gant' Graeme Gantley was probably the most talked about up and coming surfer in '71....became a whangarei local for a couple of years!!

Dennis Foley of Gisborne another '71 ripper Dennis was one of those nice guys....i seem to remember he was pretty laid back...but had a grunty smooth surfing style!!....good bloke!...hung out with him in Moroochydore.....ah yes..the good old sunshine Coast...great memories!!.....

and does anyone remember this real nice guy.....Clem Davies Clem was one of the original board makers in Whangarei...had a factory in Robert st for a couple of years..around '69-'71......Clem marries Irene Smith....sadly Clem left us recently...awesome guy!!!
