ENLARGE PHOTOS........Click on 1970 song (Juke Box) then click here... .....and we were also experiencing a whole new lifestyle!!

The Hippie lifestyle had hit top gear in 1970!! A lot of us were into our own little businesses...'self sufficient'..'live off the land'...it was all happening...Dave Boyd and Bruce Fraser in their new alternative shop...vine st Whangarei....and of course beards were totally 'in'!!

Dave and Bruce at their shop... The leather thing was totally in then (1970) leather sandals particularly and ..........leather rings (on Daves hand)..Ha!

long hair and flaired shirts as well... Mike Cooney and Paula Haywood having a night on the town.....'Chalet' restaurant Whg. ....and who's that with the long blonde hair smiling in the background...non other than Mr Phil Clarke...soon to hook up with sherry Aickin!

and Mark Wheeler was getting into the long hair ...whiskers..hang loose t-shirt & levis... Mark with his homemade Midget Farrelly sideslipper.....

Graham Allan at his Raumanga digs..... Another nice lookin Supersession board.....of course 'Supersession' got its name from the music album that came out in '68 by Al Kooper..Mike Blomfield & Stephen Stills...an album which we all thought was pretty cool!

43 yrs later ...and here's the first Supersession board..so i was informed Was actually a very cool name for a surfboard make!!

Supersession surfboards...Walton st..whangarei Supersession started and operated for a couple of years in Whangarei, and heaps of us worked there at some point........i did sanding there for a couple of months....i was the worst sander in history....sandthru's everywhere...sheeeesh!!

bottom of a Supersession board..... I guess this was a board 'Gant' shaped for Graham Allen or maybe Graham Kelly!!!!........

Autumn 1970 ( i think...maybe later!!) .barby time with Dave Godfrey and John Clements!! Mind you...i remember that trademark jersey John used to wear all the time...ha!

Greg Alach in Aussie...summer of 1970 This picture kind of tells the 1970 priority story....Surfboard first (biggest).... Bob Dylan second (culture).... hippie third...nature and animals fourth...money 273rd...ha!...well..sort of in that order!!

Yvonne & Greg Alachs hodad bro 'Max'...or 'Junior' as he was known!! Is that a fat lip ..or is he.....whatever!!!.....very romantic tho!!...ha!

and if anyone knew Junior in the 60s...they would remember his mechanical creations!! That awesome PA Vauxhall he modified....

and here's a young Mr Steve Erceg and companions ..... showing us the hippie style of the early 70s....lots of leather stuff ...especially sandals...leather bags and waistcoats........'far out man'...'i can dig that'..ha!...i think that leather work is Dave Boyds handiwork (leather bag & Stephens sandals)...

and who could forget the man who never stopped smiling...'Fitz' ...Dave Fitzpatric Fitz not only enjoyed his surfing and motorbikes...he also was a great rugby player....and when we used to play Maungatoroto school (where he grew up)...our coach would always say...watch that no.8 (fitz)...hes dynamite....and he was!!

& here we have the 'long term' Paradise Bay family...John and Mary Ralph & kids...maybe mid-late 90s These guys have been living a short drive away from Paradise Bay (next to Taupo Bay) for more than 30 yrs now....and when i went to Paradise Bay at Xmas 2013 with Dave Boyd...there was John & Mary in the surf...awesome!!

John Ralph... Monterey (California) boy struttin his stuff in the California sunshine John spent his young days in Hawaii(surfing) & moved to Monterey California in '64..did abolone diving..saved some money & traveled eventually to North Africa where he fell for a 'pretty Kiwi brunette'..& their still surfing together 43 yrs later..in NZ..

Mary Ralph(Gough) originally from Palmerston North...gets the surfing travelling bug in the late 60s yea....just like we all did!!!....but she was determined to make it to South Africa and Jeffries Bay .........here..hitting the headlines in the local Gold Coast rag...ha!

and thats exactly where she ended up in 1970...'Bruces beauties' gone all commercial..... sheeeesh...it dosen't take long does it, for someone to start making a buckaroo $$$$$ out of it....was not the hippie sentiment of 1970....far from it!!!!

ever wondered what Cape St Francis (of 'Endless Summer' fame) looks like today? not a lot different....Ha!..........oh boy!!..how scary is progress!!!!!!!!...sheeeeshh!

and of course ...if you go to South Africa,... you have to go to the ....majestic and dramatic Cape 19 yr olds...(current Northlander) Mary Gough and surfing friend Sylvia Paulik (from Wellington NZ)....enjoying the sunshine below Table Mountain....Cape Town 1970

and of course...the whole reason for a trip to SA.....Jeffries Bay.... Mary and Sylvia with their newly aquired transport....'dynamite' the friendly bike.....

Well Mary certainly knew how to get into the local rag (Evening Post)...just let your Visa expire... and the 'pretty brunette' (as she is described) would ride on her trusty old bike ('named 'dynamite) to the police station each day until it was all sorted out....."the fun of travelling"....awesome!!

'Well behaved young people are also attracted to Jeffreys Bay'...as it quotes there.... of course...all us kiwis were well behaved...Ha!!....Mary and Sylvia...starring again!!!!.

Sylvia...and some of the Jeffreys crew...April 1970 the interesting thing here is.....Aussie 'Legs' Ken Rouw bought those newspaper clippings back from South Africa even though he never knew Mary and Sylvia....however 45 yrs later their now connected thru this website...very cool!!

and so Mary and Sylvia found themselves in a pristine location............ looking right out on the magnificence of a J Bay lineup.. and when the surf was flat, they had a nice little business making boardshorts....now isn't that just typical of this period....little hippie micro-businesses springing up everywhere...

another beautiful empty day at J Bay ...summer of 1970 A good South African friend of mine 'Spange' Andy Spangler....has been living and building boards here now for a couple of years....not a bad spot to live!!!....mind you ..cold in the winter....

Sylvia and Peter cruising down the road in a good old Kombi... flowers on the windscreen wipers ...'can you dig that'...Ha!!..

Mary Gough....havin fun on a beautiful J Bay down-the-liner....43 yrs ago!! the beauty of this wave,is that it just keeps winding up all the time...you just have a short moment for a cutback..then it just winds up again..& again ..& again..& again...awesome wave!...well Mary is still surfing awesome waves..Paradise Bay (NZ) now!!

and how awesome is this...Mary and Sylvia do a catch-up......40 years later!!!.. no doubt..talking about the good old days and all their adventures together...classic stuff!!!...looks like Wellington harbour around 2010!!

Paradise Bay (Northland) has, and always will be...a beautiful little isolated beach... Which can have some awesome banks...one of the Waipu occasionals 'Doug Hislop' spent a decade up in that area in the 70-80s......Doug looking down on that classic Paradise Bay setup....Doug..one of the 'Windnsea' surf team that occasioned our shores

Doug finds a sweet little (big) swell at Hendersons Bay....around late 70's Awesome looking banks but pretty hard to get out i expect......Henderson Bay ..east coast ..opposite side of 90mile beach....

Former Taranaki boy Doug (Hislop) and the boys ...going on a little adventure.... Doug..& Gisborne boys..Paul (weed) Conole..& Peter (Goody) Goodwin find a sneaky way to the west coast...way way way around past shippies..via the gumfields & sandhills...getting back tho, meant the long hall around past the huts, Pines, Supers & Muke....

in fact ...'weed' (Paul Conale).. ends up as a representative from NZ on the International surfing circuit 1972...a bit like Roger Crisp did a couple of years later...sweet stuff!!...

Now.... what are the local babes up too!!.....the 'three Lovely Princesses'...as the caption says Miss Aquarama 1970... Margaret Player (1st middle..representing Waipu SLSC) Karenne Kawili (2nd right)....Robin May (3rd..left)

Claire Marinkovich hits the front cover in 1970 as well...very impressive! Now hangin out in Melbourne....Claire catches some family time in Whangarei for a few weeks!!

wow..all the girls seemed to be making the big time in 1970... Irene Clark...runner-up to Miss Northland

holy moly!......Irene, Nola Durham & Raewyn Bax in the Miss NZ contest!!! .........ok ...thats enough of the 'Babes' lets get back to surfing!!!...Ha!

& here's that 'blonde headed stompy wompy real gone surfer boy'.... brother Greg Alach.... Greg has those classic (enviable) golden locke's, good build and brown skin....the classic surf look.......ah..how we loved those twin fins too!!!

"Junior.........wrack off man...this websites about surfing..not hodad stuff....sheesh" Max Alach's substitute for a surfboard...his PA Vauxhall.......actually to tell you the truth...was into doing up cars myself!!!

in fact i had a customised FJ Holden...a bit like this one...sold it to Kevin Price!! Nigel Boyd helped me put a big motor in it...had a floor shift..twin headlights......but..dam!!! didnt get a photo of it!......if you did up a wagon in the 60s-70s send us a photo!!!!

meanwhile a lot of us were still heading over the ditch....Pauline Cameron...Blue Mountains..Sydney!

and more and more of us got into making boards........... Clive ripping a wave up here.....good advert for his new design...'Extra-Textured' board designs

Clive (Smart) sittin in the sweet spot on a Sandy Bay wave...autumn of '70 on his day Clive could be a standout!!……Clive fairly screaming along here!!...had that powerhouse 'crouchy' style

Mr Walsh seemed to be getting into some pretty serious photography around now too!! Bert captured in the classic slot.......Keith has always been the total sold-out surf grom....Keith now lives on the South Pataua road near Colin Lowe ..2014...can't surf these days...dam old persons stuff..like a lot of us!!!

'Gant' (Graham Gantley)...really lookin good these days...1970... ....definitely favored to start winning some serious comps.......Gant had a beautiful fluid style with a smooth elegant classy cutback like Wayne..(Parkes)......how come all these Takapuna boys turned out so good!!!!!

now who's this with the Rod Stewart hair?.......... well by 1970....nearly everyone had long hair.....even..... Mike Tinkler..Ha!...Mike looking cute and innocent......not sure i would explain Mike by those terms tho!!!...Ha!!

"hey mum ...can you hold up my new board for me"...... "i want to take a photo"......."thanks mum".........Jean Franks...being a good mum for son 'Guy' (Franks)....Ha!....1970

by 1970...there was a new trans-tasman ferry...the Canberra i remember going over on this ship twice....we didn't care how long it took...we weren't in a hurry to go anywhere....it was cheaper than flying and they feed us for 3 days...how good is that!!

meanwhile ...Dick Robinson continues his trip thu Europe..... Classic uncrowded 'La Fontania'...France 1970

Dick with his 2 boards...grand Plage ..Biarritz..France ...1970 Amazing how radical fins had become by 1970. Some of the best girl surfers in the country.....Gisborne 1970 Val Treadea...Gail Porter...Carol Cranch...Gail Patty....Cindy Pinnenger....Lyn Galloway

Ding Bay and that cranking left...summer of 1970 so nice when leg ropes and short boards came in...made it so much easier to surf this place.....before leg ropes we were never as adventurous ...cause when you lost your board ..it just got smashed!!!!

Ding Bay always had a nice little right hander into the corner as well..... tides a little high here this day...can get a little back-washy on high tide..summer of 1970
