'NZ Surfer' 1st edition..Name changed to 'New zealand Surf Magazine' after 1 issue..just lasted 6 issues..was also the year Australia & NZ joined the Vietnam war..which was a complete surprise & mild concern to us and our growing free-spirited lifestyle!

April '65 I remember how excited i was when i first saw the cover of this mag....seeing that photo on the front cover seemed to really speak to me of the true nature and fun of surfing...playing with the ocean swells...the surfing experience was so alive to us!!

but also how mildly concerned we were at the news that NZ was becoming involved in Vietnam ....The 161st Battery of the RNZArmy load an L5 Howitzer on to a M113 Armoured Personal Carrier on the shores of Indochina ...1965

But back in peaceful old NZ ...It was the year Blonde hair and a 1 stripe t-shirts were happening ..18 yr old Mike Cooney at Ruakaka (parents house) with my nephew Clyde.......and i admit..the peroxide bottle was doing the rounds with a few surfers then too..Ha!!

1965 was also the year the Refinery chugged into gear Refinery just finished a couple of months earlier...a lot of us got jobs on the construction site...bet they didn't know they were funding Aussie surf trips...Ha!

Sandy Bay (Northland) was starting to get pretty popular now! Mal Eggington...summer of '65 ..finding a little wave in the corner...that was 48 yrs ago and Mal still hangs out there...how cool is that!!

Waihi...summer of '65 Mike..with the 3 hutton Brothers Myself...Wayne..Brian and Terry Hutton did a surf trip down to waihi..and camped here under these trees for a few days....Brian and Mike all surfed out ....such cool fun...good old Hillman got us home again!

Wayne having a beautiful glassy morning surf at Waihi. Feb '65..look at the weather...beautiful...had several days of magic waves there!!....Wayne having a bit of solitude!!!......never saw many other surfers on this trip....we didn't even know if they were surfing Waihi yet!!!

and the girls were starting to make a big statement in '65 too!! This is a great shot!! Possibly Elisabeth Worsfold at Waipu Cove summer of '65.....this photo is so typical of those days ....up early and trimming before the wave even starts to break!!...A very cool photo!! full of memorabillia!!

and here's Ainsley Knight at Pataua...summer of '65 Ainsley surfed well, and according to the monthly Tatahi mag points poll (addition 3 page 15)...was ahead of Craig Rice, Colin Lowe and Leslie Ward...very impressive...what a beautiful Pataua peak...no doubt awesome on low tide!!

and around '67 girls like Josie Armitage were surfing pretty good!! Nice goofy-foot style by Josie at Waipu ...summer of '67

and of course who could forget that regular visitor to Waipu Cove...Jackie Mitchell She used to arrive at Waipu with all the Auckland crew in a open-air mini-moke...classic!!..a very good surfer..won the NZ titles in '68

Took a trip to Ahipara ...summer of '65 Just us guys in the water ....Brett Knight walking out ..Phil Cooney on closest wave...cant remember who else...maybe Wayne Hutton.............had some beautiful shaped waves that weekend!!

this same day Brett took off on this wave...and..... about 2 seconds after this photo was taken, his board flipped over and smashed him in his face......he had that scar on his face his whole life! ...sheeeeesh!!

Pop-out boards were happening by '65... Colin Hannahs Atlas Woods on the left....Mike Kings 'pop-out' middle....Brian Kings Quane on the right!...

Ruakaka '65 ..everyone was getting into making their own boards...even the neighbours!!! Kings neighbour in Keyte st Whangarei.....Colin Jones.... made a mould...blew his own blank..shaped and glassed it in his garage....not a bad looking effort!!...even got some sort of leg rope attachment which had not been invented (mainstream) yet!!!

Kamo 1965...looking down Station Rd East.... 1965 was the year that Kamo became part of Whangarei.....i lived with the Hutton family here in '64 ...they lived just to the right of picture...fixing the old Model A...and making surfboards ..ha!

Dargaville 1965.... Becoming a regular hangout for us now as we regularly surfed the west coast....The Matich Brothers hometown.......looks like something out of a Wild West movie...Ha!!....expect the Sheriff to come riding up the street any minute!!!....

A sleepy little Kaitaia in '65 Of course Ahipara was becoming a regular feature on our surf calender in '65

and on the way to Kaitaia..... I thought it was very cool going thru Kawakawa when those trains used to rumble thru...remember!!....very cool!!

escpecially those old steam trains... hissin' and spittin and rumbling along..smoke everywhere!!......awesome.....Kawakawa 1975

Mike Cooney & Bruce Ryan were inseparable at this time..we just surfed all over the country together Bruce was a great mate.......mike here with his new Hayden Kenny board...always bought a Hayden every time i was in OZ....

Langs Bch 1965...we had been surfing Langs & 'Ding Bay' about a year or 2 now!! Dick (Ding) Robinson & i had just finished a surf at the north end of Langs(1964) when Dick showed me his board that was all dinged up from the rocks below.......and....... (see next photo)...

the magical 'Ding Bay' as it is now known as in all its glory..... Dick Robinson and i stood at this exact same spot in January '64......Dick said to me "we should call this place 'Ding Bay'...and i said "yea...and w'ell call you 'ding' too"...and the rest is history....

in fact 'Ding' (Dick Robinsons) nickname (because he named 'Ding Bay)... is now found widely in many books....

and dont forget how good Waipu can get sometimes too!!... This would be a rare day, but i have seen and surfed it like this several times over the years.....you may have as well.........can break just like a point break!!.....summer of '65

with a nice shaped little high tide bank sometimes too... look at this hot summers day in '65... late afternoon ...and its still offshore...how good is that!!!....love it when those sou'westers kick in for a few days......Waipu Cove ..Bream Bay Northland

and there's that nice little right hander starting to work off the point... we would have such fun on these little nice shaped high tide Saturday evening peelers......followed by a little bit of a party in a tent or the surfclub......then crash in your sleeping bag somewhere.....awesome!!

one of those cooler Autumn days in '65... Remember this...Kneeling and paddling flat out...probably all 3 of us will catch the wave.....ohhhh who cares...more the merrier ....well...was "kind of" that attitude then....wasn't it!!........Waipu Cove ..and a grunty little swell!!

and what about paddling out on a reasonable sized swell.... and someone cuts across in front of you on one of those big old heavy boards with no legrope.....mate..gettin' smacked by one of those logs was no joke...but then again that was all part of the fun!!!!

and here's that new spot again that we found around now......Moureeces.....very cool spot in 1965... ....(Moureeces..East coast Northland)

Mike Cooney at Moureeces...summer of '65 we used to love this place...you ended up making a whole day of it because it was so far to go...and sometimes we traveled on to the next bay further around...got stuck in the mud a few times !!....had an awesome session with 'Gant' here once i remember!!

Ian Mclean looking very polished on a small Oakura wave!! ...Oakura....sleepy little Northland East Coast bay.....

Ross and Tui sharing a wave at Oakura...summer of '65 Man these guys love sharing a wave together......must be a competitive thing..i mean look at the better wave behind them....Ha!

Mike Cooney ..Pataua...winter of '65 By 1965 we had these short sleeved vests, which made winter surfing so much more enjoyable!!

and on a flat Waipu cove summers evening of '65 'Fuzzleguts' as Tui calls her...little Dianne Wallace!!

Johnny Bruce cuts a lonely figure on one of those 'cool off' sort of days.... small clean day at Waipu....summer of '65

Here's that smooth Alach boy again (left)...... Gregs brother 'Junior'...( who still loves building cars nearly 50 years later).......here he is at Pauline Wilsons Dads workshop with Chris Roberts and John Hay...summer of '65

Surfing was still very cool and mellow in NZ in '65 But not so in the US.....Johnny Fain and 'Da Cat' have a war going "and when i realised that he (Miki) had little regard for my health...i knew there was a screw missing"...Johnny Fain

in fact we would still stop and have a chat...even if we didn't know them Bob Comer stops to say hi to the Auckland crew...somewhere up north!!...1965 (the friendly years in NZ).......while in the US Johnny Fain and Miki dora were trying to kill one another!!!...Ha!

bit of a nice clean morning session ....Waipu .summer of '65 Tui and the crew havin fun.....do you remember those warm clean summer Saturday mornings....how nice was it surfing those nice clean groundswell lines!!!!

Tim Frazerhurst and Allan Matheson having a nice session at Whananaki ..summer of '65 must have been a fairly sizable swell running around the point this day!!....

Allan Matheson on an outgoing whananaki bar.... you can just about see the rip going out...Xmas 1965

according to Tui who took the photo.....Whananaki 8ft+ and pumping!! How awesome would that place be at 8ft!!......Whananaki..a 40 minute drive from Whangarei....

tui got this great shot of Frank Cassidy.... Frank flying down the line on a sweet Raglan wave.....Raglan surf trip ..summer of '65

Mike Cooney on a solid Raglan line-up...summer of '65 was one of those big wild west coast swells, that comes up in about 2 hours....and no legrope..sheeeesh!!...when you lost your board...it either ripped out to sea or ended up miles down the road....what was left of it!!!!!!....Ha!!

and guess who rocked up to share a wave with us at Waipu in 1965.... a little blue penguin.....a long way from home...but just casually walked up the beach all by himself...very cute!!

Ian Butt & Murray Jacks having a nice saturday morning session at Waipu...summer of '65 How inviting does that look!!!!..

just hangin out at the Cove...the classic summer days of '65 who are these 2 guys in the front? Rod Haywood?...i think that's Ian Butt (white jeans) & maybe Craig Rice with glasses!..just a lazy old day in the 60s..no rush...we would just hang around all day..have a sleep ..maybe..or a pie...beautiful lazy old 1965

Waipu and Piha Clubby...Ian Hill..south corner of Langs...1965 we were still just surfing right in the corner by the boat sheds until '66 when we finally started paddling right out to surf the point...was a hairy take-off on those big old boards

the boys playing on those little ripples in the south corner of Langs...summer of '65 Ross hiding in the shade on a hot summers day.....was such cool fun times....

surfing the corner of Langs...summer of '65 Ross paddling out...maybe Tui and Dak!!!....not sure about the small guy on this side!!

south end of Langs ...summer of '65.. The boys havin' fun.....Ross ..Barry Chappell...and Phil Mischesky building a dam at the little river that runs out at south Langs....remember doing that myself many times...did you!!!

this is a great shot of Ian Butt.....epitimises the uncomplicatedness of the mid 60s surfing... Ian....'just takin it easy'!!!

Reotahi 2016...Roger Crisp territory.... quite a reasonable community these days!!.....but back in the 60's..it was just empty prairie land!!!...

You also might remember around now in Whangarei... a band called 'The Pacers'...originally called 'The Harry Mann Combo'....remember!!.....Russell Shaw on Sax...Ewan Simpson...Alan Yovich....Peter Brown...Frank Bates...and Harry Mann..

Now lets take a trip down to Takapuna Auckland January 1965... you didn't have to buckle your seat belt..Ha!..we didn't have any..We would leave Whg on our Safari & firstly drive past the Oakleigh Service Station where the 'Price' family lived..sometimes we would see a Steam train as we passed over the railway bridge

and often we would fill up with gas here at the Ruakaka pumps.. in fact...we always filled up with gas here when we were at the Ruakaka Surf Club for the weekend...and got all our 'munchies' here too..at the mini-supermarket....

and...sometimes you might stop at the top of the Bryderwyns for a quick cuppa... my Mum and Dad were still operating it in '65.....i remember winding up Bobby Darin on that stereo cabinet in the corner around 1962...Ha!

in 1965...when you got over to the other side of the Bryderwyns... it was like your now in a different kind-of unfamiliar territory ...in other words...when you were going north and you saw Bream Bay when going over the Brynderwyns...you felt like you were home somehow...remember!!

down past Warkworth.... think we might have actually had to drive thru the main street of Warkworth in '65...was no bypass then...

Mansion House ...Kawau Island...1965 How beautiful and tranquil does that look....mid 60s was an awesome time in history....

you would head down past Waiwera.....still pretty cruisy in '65 ..in '65 Waiwera pools were hot mineral springs....not sure if its still like that...maybe!!!!

Down to Milford Beach..Takapuna..New year 1965 The hotties were just starting to emerge from Takapuna around now, and they pretty well dominated for around the next decade...we felt a little out of place coming down here in '65...we felt like the new kids on the block!!

the great metropolis of the Auckland North Shore....Takapuna Bch 1965 came down to Auckland ..January '65 to buy myself a mini...clutch slipped all the way home...bloody Auckland car-salesman..Ha!

In the winter of '65...a few of us headed off to Aussie.... Big Autumn swell Noosa main beach.....empty...

Trev got this shot of Peter Way...summer of '65.. runnin' down a sweet little 'shipwreck wave.....goofies paradise...

and local stylist...Ross Edge...doing a beautiful trim here... I think this is a great photo.....has that typical 1965 look ....gliding!!

but of course....the world number one stylist and world champ in '65 was...Mr Fred Hemmings... now!!....how classic and smooth does that look!!!!...

another classic local surfer..Roddy Finlayson doing his signature' move at Waipu..the 'coffin ride.. actually...the 'coffin ride' was not that easy to do...was hard to steer for one thing!!!!!

Kaiwaka...1965...usually the road (on left) we took to go to Mangawhai on the way up from Auckland..

Whangarei Hospital...1965 I think the Horahora rugby club was there somewhere....where some of us played rugby in '65

Haywood Motors...and the new Valiant comes out....only 1,298 pounds!!!!!..or $2,596!!! imagine paying $2,596 for a brand new car....well we did then!!!...actually it was still in pounds in '65...

Good ol' FJ .....only 898 pounds!!!! Holden has quickly demonstrated that its as much at home in New Zealand as in Australia....(as it quotes there)

Classic photo from Trev King....Shipwreck Bay..summer of '65 This photo really captures the vib of the mid 60s....one guy doing a rail-hold crouch....another guy standing up as he goes over the wave...and the Kneel paddle take-off...

how cool does that look...was such fun!!!... Dicky Robinson giving us a smile...some bearded guy(maybe Tony Scott)?? and Brucey Ryan...those classic '60s days....what an awesome time in history!!!

'Bob Dylan' Dick Robinson and Billy Pritchard take a cruise up to Matauri Bay...summer of '65 check those golden blonde lockes!!!

Matauri Bay in the background....Bill with his fashion shorts on... Rope belts were the rage in the early 60s...Ha!!...

and of course 'Smurf the surf' and 'Surfin' Sam' T-shirts were all the rage too.... That cartoon stuff of the early to mid 60s was so innocent and cool...awesome days!!...

Thought this might be Jim Nash... Apparently thats a big block of wax he had there...we used to make our own blocks of wax around that time.....

Beautiful shot of Tui gliding across a sweet little Pataua wall..... Summer of '65....magic days 'hotdoggin' the bar...sweeeet!!

Ross Edge...Moureccess...1965 oh how we loved Moureccess in those days....beautiful isolation and fun 'hotdoggin' the day away....
