ENLARGE PHOTOS........Click on 1966 songs (Juke Box)...then click here! Surfing had become so well established in 1966, that finding new places to surf and visiting 'now legendary surfbreaks' had become the thing to do! ...How amazing....from obscurity to mainstream in just a few short years!! ...amazing

and it was also the year of first pirate radio station!...Radio Hauraki's 'Tiri' in the Hauraki Gulf Was very cool...because when we did a surf trip we could now listen to an independent radio station...playing a lot of so-called 'banned music'.......all radio stations were Govt controlled and highly censored at this point in time!!

and also the year that young people in NZ reacted openly against the Vietnam war... ...the first NZ protest march was in Christchurch which often seemed to be a National leader...as we saw in the early development of surfing with Dennis Quane and the like........

1966..and here's a Summer trip around the Nth Island...how much fun would that have been in '66 Laurie, Max Atkins, Murray Jacks and Paddy Kelly....Paddy's cool citreon..Murrays mini!! the boys head across to Napier and make camp

on the way they went around thru the Bay of Plenty Ohope area...and the boys flirt with danger..like we all did at that age...man that cliff looks really unstable...i can hardly watch!!!

and down thru Hicks bay Hey, where did that girl come from!!! funny isn't it...we'd go on surf trips and girls would just appear out of nowhere....made the trips all that more fun....Ha!!!!

Xmas '66 the boys leave the east coast and head for the west coast and bigger waves! Central North Island...and the boys are on safari ..yahoo!!

and as boys tend to do....find an old plane and see if you can wreck it !! ha! an old Harvard plane somewhere in the middle of the North Island!!

and us boys know how to get into things too! No doubt it was probably all securely locked up...but what the heck...we gotta wreck this thing before we leave!!..ha!...or at least find out how everything works!

stop off for lunch at some classy spot...looks like a warm day dosen't it!. ....there were friggin' mini's everywhere then!...sheeeeesh!

and some trout fishing near Rotorua..summer of '66 Paddy takes the photos...so i think they must be watching some guy 'fly fishing'.........what i am describing here....is a typical NZ surf safari in the mid 60s....remember!!!

And eventually they hit the west coast ...Wanganui ..Jan '66 Laurie, Max and Murray havin' fun on a surf trip in '66......just like you did!..Ha!!..... Apparently those 3 turtles are still there...gotta be heritage listed by now!!! ha!

and the boys finally hit Raglan...summer of '66 Well they may have gone to Raglan first..not sure about that...however i do know thats Max & Laurie waxing up...then over the fence & across the paddocks to the surf..5 guys out..no car park, toilet or boat ramp! ..yahoo!..cowbunga!!

the boys get a couple of last waves after a 'gas' summers day at Raglan in '66... Remember those great summer offshore glassy days....watching the sun go down...totally buggered from at least 3 x 3 hr sessions...awesome...

Click on a '66 song (Juke Box) Northlands Tatahi club only lasted a couple of years or so..but '66 was the start of some the regions inter-club contests as well as local competitions!

Photo 2012...can you believe that!!! Barry still has all that stuff...amazing!! Original 1966 T-shirt print...well done Barry!

and here's a brand new 1966 Dunlop board.....still hadn't been ridden... not an ounce of wax on it...straight off the production line........only difference is!!!.....this photo was taken in 2013…..still waiting to be ridden after 46 years...how awesome is that!!!

and it was around about now that we had a new boardshort line...'Hang-Ten'.. Corky Carrol...Mike Doyle...Bruce Brown.....big names in our world in '66.....very cool days....

Ian Butt and the classic boardshorts look of '66... Most boardies had one big stripe on them ...just like the T-shirts of that time had the one stripe on them.....in 1962 we didn't care what we wore...by '66 there was a definite 'surf look'........

Summer of '66 waipu cove Tatahi comp.. We think its the Tatahi juniors about to hit the water..if you recognise anyone there, let me know!.i think thats Ainsley Knight & Elaine Andresson on the right (hope there not guys:) & tui in the water! Photo taken by Paddy Kelly who now lives in Canada

and this is possibly the same heat as the photo before...summer of '66 Ainsley Knight.Elaine Andresson.Liz Whitford.Laurie Langridge.Rick Cleverly.John Blomfield...John surfed this heat in the flagged area & had his board confiscated.Laurie then beat him Ha! Definite tensions had developed between hardcore clubbys & surfers!

22yr old Waipu school dental nurse Liz Worsford...April '66 Liz was the Womens title holder in the Tatahi club..and is about to head off overseas..eventually going to Sth Africa to surf 'Bruces beauties'..note the Aussie board with 'surf permit' ..Photo News 2'6pence ha!

Tatahi member Ian butt..showing a real lot of class here Very smooth style...great photo..Ian was the Publicity Officer for the Tatahi club!!

Waipu Comp '66....dont know who they are...except maybe Bruce Ryan closest to us (with board) & Dick Robinson next to him....got any ideas?...Laurie thinks its the same heat as a couple of photos back....but cant see any girls!!...this photo would be typical of many local comps going on around NZ at that time...5 or 6 man heats...

Great shot of 'Tim' Conan Frazerhurst Tim excelled around this time winning the Sandy Bay Senior Mens Tatahi comp in Aug '65...the 'Dunlop Paddleboard cup' and entered the NZ champs around that period also...a well respected Northland surfer was Tim with a powerful style!

some of the Tatahi girl competitors Ainsley Knight..Leslie ward..Elaine 'Uggs' Andresson..Pamela Grayson..Jenny Rutherford..i was going to call them 'beach bunnies'..are you allowed to call girls that these days..sheesh..there still bunnies to me..Ha! (but.. 'good surfers'..beach bunnies!!)

Misty Tatahi Comp day at Waipu Cove...summer of '66 Pretty sure thats Max Atkins and Ian butt with the small hat on...and maybe Tim Frazerhurst with the sombrero..but definitely Ian Mcleans Vdub...Lauries Morris...& Barry's mini....great days!!

this is some of the pathetic competition we had to surf against.bunch of hopeless Windnsea surfers cant even remember their names...was it someone Parkes!! Burns rings a bell..Karney..Banbree.. Toff..I am the Way..who else...oh yes nice guy 'Pete Tremain.....just joking..just joking boys..awesome club!!!

Mike doing a little re-enrty....probably Waipu Cove '66 Mike was one of the Auckland regulars to Waipu...usually with Parkesy and the mob....note Mikes Windnsea label on his boardshorts...that windnsea mob were pretty intimidating.....

Jim ( Carney) sporting one of those 'Wind n sea' t-shirts... Probably the best club around in '66...although i think maybe the Gisborne club would dispute that....Ha!!

Tatahi club Champs Waipu Cove '66...Looks like a goofy footer on this wave .. must be John Blomfield...a nice looking left....very foggy day!!!..cant see the Hen & Chicks.....very unusual to see fog up here in the North...summer fog is usually associated with cold water & our summer water is very tepid...often around 23-25degrees..

Northern Advocate photo of the 'Oceans Tauranga Surf Team' 1966 Great photo...typical of the mid-60's surf culture...they may have surfed against Tatahi....being in the Advocate!!..(local newspaper)...have been told its wayne Parkes (3rd from left)...Tony Randrup (11th from left) & Pauline Pullman far right!!!!....

Guess who and where? Well, it's actually Dick Robinson...with one of those old diving wetsuits on with the horrible flap that we used to cut off ...and he's surfing a place called .....................!!! looks soooooo much like Ken Beehre!!!!

Maybe this will give you a clue In 1966 we were pretty privileged to have a man made surf spot open up to us here in the North ..for about 3 years...and it was sensational....

yes in '65-66 they completed the Marsden A power station Although this photo was taken in about 1968...you can still see the wharf which went out about 200m....a couple of months after this photo, a massive swell smashed the pier to pieces...we watched one wave peel off 100m of decking...awesome power!!!

...but 3 years earlier...in 1965..... ..they began to dig right into the sandhills ( as you can see here) & you could surf right inside the sanddunes....was fantastic!.....these power station waves became legend during that period...even seen in later years in the movie 'Children of the sun'

then they began to pump sand a long way out to sea, as you can see top left, see how small the guys r They literaly pumped 1000s of tons of sand out nearly 200m creating the most awesome peaks (north peak & south peak)...with a deep channel to easily get out (we surfed it at 12-15ft and you could just sit comfortably in the deep channel)...awesome wave!..

Brian Barnes surfing the 2nd peak (south peak).photo taken from the pier(north peak in the distance. you can clearly see how the sandhills had been carved out on the other side, and the most fantastic bowling left would peel down there!! sand movement also caused neat little peak to develop where Brians surfing! The black pipe on floats was the sand pump!

Then they built a pier and began to barge supplies in although it dosen't look it in the photo...that piers about 20ft above the water..and when you surfed the peak on the other side of the channel (south peak) you could shoot the pier ...like Huntington Bch...awesome fun!

and heres Dick shooting the pier in the winter of '66 Dick and Mike Cooney stumbled on to this spot in the early days of construction, and had many an awesome session here...summer time was fabulous...warm water perfect peaks!!!

and here's that left the Dick is riding...goes right under the pier... This is low tide...but that right was also an excellent wave on high tide....

Mike Cooney summer of '66 Telephoto shot taken from the pier...about 150m out to sea on the beautiful north peak...you can see the deep water channel on this side!! The south peak left peeled off straight under the pier!! awesome fun..

Power Station 1967 Ken beehre ...Gary Orevich...and Tony Kivell....The powerstation was pretty mainstream hangout by '67....with no doubt some awesome Powerstation tales to tell!!

i cant believe Ken Beehre and Doug Ferguson were still going to school in '66 ... Ken and Doug middle row....is that Bob (Earnest) Hemmingway top left...just kids..Ha!!!.....i remember Wayne (Parkes) making it very clear to me once that i was an old bugger...Ha!!...sheeesh..Tui & Tim Murdock must have been geriatrics...Ha!

great shot of Dick Robinson at Sandy Bay..on a 'left slide'...summer of '66 We often surfed Sandy Bay a lot around that period....Sandy Bay had something special about it, even though the waves could be very fickle....it was kind-of 'our beach' (the Northland crew) if you like!!!

and yes.... Sandy Bay could get pretty dam good sometimes too!...summer of '71 of course it was all short boards now...i think Laurie's somewhere in that photo!!

and a heck of a lot of fun sometimes too!!...summer '66 w'ere not sure who is in this photo at Sandy Bay in '66...but it could be you!!...let us know!!

is this any clearer for you? i mean...that just looks like summer fun time in '66 dosen't it....the boys just havin a 'gas' funtime....and as Boydy and Ken Beehre started saying about now..... 'teruuuch'...... ( or 'to much') ha!!

The crew hangin out at Sandy bay ...summer of '66..(from left) Drew Campi John Ivey Tom Milligan Craig Rice Laurie..Mark Tate(standing)..Ian Butt..Bill Player..Tony Kivell..Gary Orevich Derek Brott with Lauries green morris & 'Clive' the truck..everyone looking very excited this day..must have been 1ft onshore!..ha!

'Clive' (written on the top of roof).... very cool surf wagon.....Billy Player checking out the small swell at Sandys

Mimiwhangata ..summer of '66 there's those classic old cars again 1946 ford and Chevy ....surfers unknown...maybe you recognise someone!!!!

Ian Mclean and the boys check out the next beach around from Sandys.... looks like a nice little set-up...at least you have a wave to yourself.....the East coast of Northland is just an endless series of little bays and awesome waves....

Mike Cooney & Ken Beehre..Sandy Bay...summer of '66 there was always pretty good banks at Sandys on high tide...the look of high tide...always seemed to be a little warmer and friendlier too...was a special time with a great vib in the water!!!!!

'Dick Robinson signature move' Sandy Bay '66 The 'on the nose quasimoto' move was one of Dicks regular surf moves ...he just about owned that move...had it down to a tee!!

'Tui Wordley signature move'...perhaps Pataua or Moureeces..summer of '66 Everyone seemed to have some move that became their signature move those days....Tui's 'sit down nose ride' always spoke of the magic of 60's fun surfing!!

oh...not again!!!......... Ross......didn't you tell Tui he's supposed to stand up on a surfboard!!!!!!....

oh........for goodness sake Tui...give it a rest!!!!......... no...how awesome is this....77 yr old Tui... 47 yrs later (2013) surfing one of his regular spots in Victoria (Aus)....

Dosen't this just inspire you..... Tui...still surfing great at 77 years old....still kneels on his board ...can Kneel (paddling) for a whole 2 hour summer session....amazing!!

maybe this will inspire you then.... Barry "Magoo" still ripping at 85......i mean how good does he look!!!!!....sadly tho Cancer got him eventually....

and here's Tui's new board that he's making....in Victoria Aussie He reckons it time to go on a bit of a longer board now ( 10ft).......oh come on Tui..whats wrong with ya.......pikker!!!!

and would you believe it!!!....here's his mate..Ross Edge... building his 10ft board at the same time...Whangarei NZ....i think they must have been tied at the umbilical cord.....Ha!!

look at this...Ross and Tui surfing together in 1963.... and both building 10 footers at the same time 50 years later....how cool is that!!!

and here's Ian Butt dropping in on John Blomfield...Waipu '66 Johns signature move (in my mind) was his beautiful stylish drop-knee backhand turn...you may remember him for some other move...but he definitely was a classy surfer...no question about that!!!

no question what Kit Steers move was....his supa-radical kickout... I often saw him kick that board airborn on many of his kickouts.....you didn't want to be to close to him...sheeesh!!!...

and i would have to say the 'Rossco' Ross Edge was the classiest 'trimmer' around!.. Ross trimming on a Waipu Cove wave summer of '66......Ross looking very Hawaiian here...could be mistaken for Waikiki....

'Harro' doing a very stylish bottom turn..Waipu..summer of '66 Ken 'Harro' Harrison...quite the flamboyant local character in those days so legend goes....and one could quite believe that seeing the next photo!!!!

'Harro' (Ken Harrison) at Sandy Bay..maybe 1967 or '68 The longer hair is often a dead giveaway for the start of the hippie era where boards got shorter and hair got longer.....is 'Harro' being a clown a dork...funny man or cool here...only 'Harro' knows!!...ha!!

well...your not the only one who can do that Ian..... Phil Cooney controlled pearling (ha!) on a beautiful clean '66 summers day at Pataua.....

a larger than life Northland personality...who is it?.... you probably had one in your town too!!...

yessss...who could ever forget that delightful face!!! Surfing has always had its trademark people...Tui was one of them (here in the north)..maybe Billy Pritchard...John Blomfield...Dave Boyd ...Gant...Tony Ogilvy..John Glover....to name a few!!...colourful personalities!!

.....its Tui's best mate ....Candy!!!! Sittin in front of the old Waipu clubhouse...checkin the surf out...."hey Tui woof...whats happnin my man..woof woof !!!..........ah la..cool Kandy!!

Kandy getting a cuddle from a cute blonde beach girl!!.......... Hey wait a minute isn't that Mary Alach trying to trick us with the blonde hair!!........i wonder what her Hodad bikey brother 'Junior would look like with blonde hair ...Ha!

and if you want to know who Barry Gemmell was.......well!! He looked a bit like this guy...only a lot hairier....Barry was the ultimate supa dupa bead wearing... chain-wearing hippie....an Auckland boy who hung out with some of the Northland surf crowd.....got a hard time..but was actually a realy nice guy!!

Local Northland boy..Greg Alach on the red board Greg had that unique straight legged...wide stance approach....if you've ever seen any footage of Greg Noll surfing....well....all Gregs surf the same...Ha!!...and Mr Noll is famous!!!!

now who's that who dropped in on Greg...anyone know!!! Not even sure where this place is....anyone got any ideas!!!..........but they sure make it look nice ..dont they!!....maybe thats Whananaki in the background!!

Trevor..Mike...& Brian King...Waipu Cove ..summer of '66 So cool to see all the 4 brothers hitting the combers (waves) together....Mike was one of those cool older bros..who hung out with his younger bros..great local family!!

Dennis the menace...'Goompa" King...the 4th King bro!! I think this is Uretiti..summer of '67..."Goompa' ripping.....got the name 'Goompa' because that was the first word he spoke....now grandpa's called 'goompa' or 'goomp' or 'gomp'.....and theyve got a sister too!!

Lorainne Cotteral and Pat king!! They've either won something or pretending their in Hawaii!!...ha !!....actually they were at a PTA dance...hawaiian style!!

Proud owner Brian and his recent purchase!! Brian always drove around in nice cars...i remember we all envied a nice PA Vauxall he had later on!!.....and (just quietly) some of the wagons the Auckland crew rocked up in sometimes too!!..Ha!

and.. what car do you think was the most popular surf wagon around '66..(photo Waipu Cove) ...yes, heaps of us had minis, but Peter Delarue had a 'Cooper S'...now that was a very cool car...of course he was the only one of us that could afford one..Ha!!...

16 yr old young Trevor King...stoked on surfing!! Like all the rest of us....Trev with a nice looking board!

Trevor looking very polished on this beautiful Waipu wall ...summer of '66 Looks very much like a 'peewee Blomfield style!!

as you can see 1966 was still a very clean-cut time!.... Bing Copeland and David Nuuhiwa....International Surfing Magazine 1966......and there's that single stripe T-shirt that was so much the rage then too!!

might have been a clean cut time, but surfers were still a breed unto themselves!!! The old Waipu SLSC clubhouse getting the once over by those fanatical surfers!!

and here's a bunch of those 'good for nothing'..'no good' surfie bums...Ha!! The flamboyant Billy Prichard...steely eyed Jackson...'Robinson the ring leader'...Mr Cool Brucey baby...and Barnesy the bruiser!!..............the old Waipu Cove clubhouse!

to late...they've spotted a couple!!...the unsuspecting Claire Marinkovich and friend....... the girls lap up a warm summers day at Waipu Cove 1966

meanwhile the lone defender of righteousness, good standards and clean living...Tui wordley..... .....leaves silent lonely footprints in the sand at Waipu after being at one with the charming Princess of the sea and her folding lips....HeeHEHAHA!!!

actually by 1966..the place was overrun by surfers ....summers day at Waipu '66 actually, i think there may have been a comp on this day!!!....

early morning at the Edge's house as the boys get ready for the big trip to Gisborne... ...summer of '66....looks like Kit Steer in the foreground....maybe Craig Rice in the white sweat shirt!! ....we all loved those special trips to Gisborne...did it several times myself...

in fact in '66 we went down to the Nationals in Ian Mcleans truck... i remember we were all sitting on the beach watching the finals expecting John McDermott to win , when this young guy we had heard about (Wayne Parkes) did an awesome cutback right in front of us...we all said "man that young guys good" ...ha!!!

Mal Eggingtons Auckland Nth Shore mates Jim an Ray Ward....Whangamata Xmas of '66 Both still surfing 2013...Ray lives at Noosa (poor bugger)...Jim at Te Ari........we found it a real treat heading down to Whanga Bar for the weekend, although often the beach break was just as good....luv that place when it works!!!!

Ray ward ...having a good feed...Sandy Bay...summer of '66 Mal Egg's Vauxhall...........check the new fins that were coming in in '66.......

Greg Alach....nice nose trim....warm summer day at Sandy Bay 1966 Greg looking an awful lot like Taff Kennings here!!...

Tutukaka...still pretty isolated in '66... no tar seal anywhere....those old cars of ours filled up with a ton of dust everytime we went to the beach!!....Tutukaka..our well known 'deep sea fishing' port...

Wooleys Bay....summer of '66 Most of us just by-passed Wooleys on the way to Sandys...never seemed to get as much swell as Sandy's!!.......

Mr Dick (ding) Robinson and his signature move again..... on a fast little left at Sandy Bay...summer of '66

on a big day you could see the swell wrapping into Whananaki from Sandy Bay..... as you can see in this photo.....it was often quite a trek to get to the lineup...

one of Rog's favourite pics....1966....very cool fam photo!! Mr Crisp (senior)...Roger and sister Sue leaning on Rog's first car ....a 1928 Austin 12, complete with roof racks....very very cool photo!!

Oakura ...Northland...summmer of '66.... Oakura had a nice little peeler that would run off the reef in the middle of the bay......Oakura..Ted Meridiths regular hangout!!!

Waipu Cove ..1966.... you can see how good that right hander can get off 'the point' in this photo!!

in fact here's the classic point bank breaking in '74 was a real screamer of a wave when the banks were good..a good 200m barrel............

Tui doing his trademark thing on a lonely Waipu cove day!! High tide at Waipu and those nice little reforms....

this is a great shot of 'dueling' on a warm summers Waipu morning in '66 I would like to say Tim Frazerhurst and Mike Tinkler...battling it out...but im'e not sure!!....what do you think?

Ken Harrison (Harro) and Allan McDonald (Dak)....... also having a bit of a duel....maybe Sandy Bay summer of '66

But more often than not...3 on a wave..dueling it out! Ken Harrison (Harro)....Ian butt...and ? ....Waipu summer of '66

a beautiful clean offshore evening at the Cove.... The boys just cruising and havin' fun....no aggro...just a fun cruise....awesome!....Trev King..Dave Green & Lyall wheeler

our new favourite spot...Mangawhai bar 1966 ...and that right hander on the bar could get awesome on the right tide sometimes too!!..

and here's Wayne showing us how good it can get.... nice clean righthander on the Mangawhai bar ..probably around '68

it also looked pretty impressive when the swell pumped too!! in '66 we didn't even bother surfing further around the point..it was good enough just on the inside......

aaaaahh progress....well, the waves are still the same... The current generation geting a taste of history!!!....i surfed it crowded like this with Hamish Divett recently & also by myself 50 years ago!!!....aaahhh..what a great life we've had.....

Shipwreck Bay ..summer of '66...flying down the line...awesome!!... A photo from Trevor Kings collection.....looks an awful lot like Trevor to me!!!!...there may have been a half-a-dozen other guys in the water this day....but very unlikely anyone further around the point!!!....

Cape Karikari in 1966.... the north was still very rugged and isolated in '66...with very little tar-seal...it was very much pioneering time up there!

the rugged West Coast of Baileys Bch 1966.... Baileys...like a lot of west coast beaches...often had that double bank...one on the outside.. one on the inside!.......was not a lot of fun losing your board!!!

and of course... the classic wave of the north... Pataua bar cranking it up.....interestingly in 1966 the sand bar at the end of the peninsula used to go right out into river as you can see!!.....that was before they closed off the Frogtown river!!

Unknown ..classic Pataua bar..autumn of '66 would have been a real sucky day this day on the lower tide!!!....all by himself..how awesome!!!..

Tui and Julie head up to Paradise bay....Bay of Islands area.. Taupo Bay and Paradise Bay start to become pretty popular with the locals around '66....

current Glenbervie boy...Terry Fitzgibbon and his new Atlas Woods...1966 Former Oamura boy Terry still surfs.......(now in the Sandy Bay area).nearly 50 yrs on since this photo was taken...very cool!!

South Island boy 'Terry Fitz' and mate Dave find this place called Pataua in '71 Doing an East coast surf hunt Gisborne trip, Terry finds himself at Pataua and a perfect low tide bank...fell in love with the place and has been living in the north now for 30 years.....our awesome adventurous tribe!!

Oamaru boy Terry Fiitz and mate Kim Westerskov.... heading for the 1968 Taranaki surf champs in their awesome old 1958 Kombi...how cool!!

ever have those scary moments when your travelling to a surf spot!! Near Whangarei they opened a new stretch of road (which..up until 1966 used to wind around to the right of this photo)....driving to Waipu late one night on this new stretch of road ...i fell asleep..Geoff Smith saved my bacon that night Phewwww!!..& his!

it was around about mid 60's that Mikey Dora began to make a big impact on us....his flamboyance... & unique attitude made him an icon...just after he died,Greg Knoll told a number of us at Noosa(festival of surfing)that he went to see Mikey in hospital..put his hand on Mikey & said "i love u man"..Mikey replied"luv u 2 man"& died that nite..'beautiful'

our Mikey Dora in the north.... charismatic Tui Wordley...beautiful trim at Sandys 1966....Tui had that same unspoken leadership thing about him that Mikey had....and most all...looked up to him in those early days!!!

but most of us were just 'nobodies'....just loving surfing!!.. 'unknown'...Advocate photo...Ruakaka 1966...

and another.....Advocate photo summer of '66 .....1966 ...such a cool time in history...maybe Auckland boy Harvey Lee at Waipu...

and of course in '66....it was all about fun!! Tui just enjoying himself on a summers day at Waipu Cove

and all the boys havin' fun at Ruakaka.... Bruce Ryan..Brian King...Mike Cooney...Colin Hannah...summer of '66

oh well...it was not all fun...sometimes you just had to kick butt.... another Auckland club that Tatahi challenged...Surf Sydicate..Pete Cogan..Glen Kelly...Graham Bambury...Dave Carter..& Robbie Banbury.....why is Glen looking at Robbie like that!!!!!

and some of the local surf crew were excelling in other areas too..... Waipu Cove regular Brice Beaston making his mark in cycling....

now i cant quite remember who gave me this newspaper clipping......Ha!! '66 Tatahi club championships...

dont think i'll go for a surf today....might just head around to Geoff Smiths... .. and listen to some Dylan....Crappy Saturday morning in Whangarei May 1966....

Well Trevor King decided to go out for a surf.... cold wet day...cross wind..lumpy surf....rather just listen to Dylan.....Trev at Waipu.............do you remember those sort of days!!!

Tui and a winters day at Ocean Beach ....1966 Northland winters can be pretty bitter sometimes...thats why we started heading off to Queensland...and warm winter waters and days!!....banks don't look the best this day either!!

overloaded woody in New Zealand in '66...... Jim Nash and his trusty old Austin...we would face one headlight straight ahead and the other down to the ground..Haaa!!...

Meanwhile...Tui lookin' lonely on a Pataua summer day in '66 looks like the seabreeze is about to mess it up...id'e say it about 11.30 in the morning...comin' on to 1/2 tide coming in...semi crappy banks....ha!!

Ian Butt sitting high on a nice clean little Waipu Cove wave..... Summer of '66....Waipu Cove had such a cool vibe around the mid to late 60s...very cool place....ain't nothing like the smell of a barby on a Xmas high tide clean swell sitting in the line-up with the sun setting....remember that?..awesome...

Beautiful lookin swell running this day.....Waipu...down the beach 1966.. Bill Durham and his mate...riding a pintail longboard...unusual shape for a local board...maybe an Hawaiian board!!!.....dontcha just love those offshore conditions!!....

'ad' in the Northland Photo news 1966... I think it would be a rare day when they had waves at Judges Bay..i think its near Mission Bay (Auckland) isn't it!!!.....still...its awesome to see them seeing surfing as a fun pleasure activity...

Johnny Ayton looking very polished ...trimming on the nose...summer of '66 'Dak' McDonald following up behind.....Waipu Cove

south end of Langs 1966... It was around now that we began to surf the 'south point' of Langs...was a pretty tricky wave to ride....but also got popular with the Auckland crew a couple of years later....

Terry and Kay Hutton tie the knot...Brian behind...possibly Sheryl to the right!! All the Hutton boys got married early (and young)...Wayne was 19 when he married...nice clean-cut young surfy lads..Ha!!!

the boys in their sneakers and duffle-coats....winter of '66 Cape Rienga...Brian King...Billy Pritchard and 'the right honourable Richard Robinson'....check the hair!!!...billy with his 50s flat-top....

Dicky robinson with his new Hayden Kenny board....looks kinda short...maybe it was a Kneeboard!!!... Sandy Bay...summer of '66...Dick showing a few blonde streaks there!!!....

Tim Frazerhurst has taken the Northland Senior champs ...2 years in a row... The paddle board team of Tim, Ken Beehre, bruce Ryan and John Clements came third at the NZ champs....Josey Armitage and Leslie ward were unplaced!!...

Dave boyd..Brian King and Dick Robinson enjoying the summer sun at Waipu cove in '66 Dick doing a very neat little 'reverse' peace sign there...Ha!!!!
