ENLARGE PHOTOS........Click on 1968 songs.(Juke Box)...then click here 1968 was a really interesting year...hair started growing longer...music was radically different..and the drug culture was sneaking up on us!!

it was also the year where our new hippie philosophy of brotherhood was momentarily shattered!! Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jnr is assassinated....but it was also the year that ignited the love and peace theme of a new generation!!

Mr Dick Robinson about to do some serious travelling Dick and i were starting to move towards the hippie trail at this point...along with Geoff Smith and others....Bob Dylan records were being played at monotonous regularity.....and we loved it!!!!!!!...photo--Dick and 'Runty' (aussie) Grand Plaque...France

and here's Dick having a smoke and looking a lot like Bob Dylan!! Well....thats because it is Bob Dylan....Dick was the spitting image of Bob Dylan in those days....what a compliment for Bob........ha!

like this 1971 picture of our hippie Bob Dylan-Robinson Our wedding in 1971....Lambie Leaf in the foreground....and 'Gant' (Graham Gantley) in the background with a fag in his hand....i didn't think Gant smoked!!!!....i was smoking 20 a day then...oh boy!!!

Dick and sister Dianne...Perth Airport..late '68 Mr Robinson...is on his way!...and looking pretty smooth too....wearing a tie...you kidding me!!!...he was clearly out to deceive people..Ha!!

Dick Robinson gets smoothed up in '68....snake charming tourists in London...ha!! Listen to Dicks interview to get a little insight into this trip he did to Europe in '68

and many of us were heading to Queensland Drew Campi...Tony Kivell..and Craig Rice....Coolangatta or Maroochydore....we all chose one or the other!!...........

and we were getting visitors from Aussie as well then...'Legs' Ken Rouw 'Legs'...Bob Hagner...and Wayne Charlton...spend the summer in Northland 1968....and man!....did they get some great waves...best iv'e ever seen Pataua...and the most consistant i have ever seen Ahipara!!

a nice mellow day on the bar... 'Legs'..Mike Cooney..Bob Hagner..and Wayne charlton enjoying a classic summer wave on the Pataua bar...summer of '68

Bob Hagner...these were all Cronulla boys..and were excellent surfers These guys really introduced us to the whole new Aussie aggressive approach to surfing, that was all happening in Aussie at that time!!

Pretty sure he got the date wrong on this one Legs...hay bailing at Maungatoroto...was really stoked..got $27 for 20hrs work!!!!...Charlton sells his board for $65 (pounds?)...Legs is not sure if the currency is $ or Pounds!!!...got heaps of money mum!!

'Legs' showing us that tight...shorter board surfing that was all happening Even tho the boards had got down to about 7ft at this time (also with a fairly full shape) radical surfing was definitely on the increase!!

We were staying at Ruakaka and Legs, Bob and I built the Ruakaka beach motel... That was the good job he was talking about....none of us had a clue what we were doing...so we spent a week in the Whangarei library to figure it out ...Ha!!!

meanwhile they were having beauty contests everywhere!!! could've picked a better venue...Mangawhai..1967....man we were as rough as guts in those days...Ha!!

around February we found an old 'woody' that we took up to 'Wreck Bay' (as it was called then) Bob Hagner having a good squiz...was gonna do the job perfectly!!

6 weeks of awesome Ahipara...sleeping on the beach it was offshore for the whole 6 weeks and never dropped below 3ft...awesome..'legs' and Mike (Cooney)....camping at Wreck bay..summer of '68....magic time!!!

'Coonskins' (Mike Cooney)...on a beautiful 'Wreck Bay' peeler...summer of '68 This photo was taken right out in front of our 'woody'....was like this every day for 6 weeks...amazing!!

there were just the 6 of us there..Johnny..legs'..Bob...'Coonskins' Colin Hannah and Wayne Charlton Johnny Ayton ripping a left up......Johnny was a superb surfer who really got hold of the Aussie aggressive approach....and did some serious 'carving'!!!

Wayne winning the '68 NZ open titles.....Wayne (Charlton) was an exceptional surfer..... who was able to combine the radical new shorter board tighter moves...with the fluidness and nose riding of the longboard era....i saw Wayne at Ahipara do some radical tight turns on a big left...then hang 10 for several seconds...amazing surfer!!.

well....after saving a bit more money ...'legs' ..Bob and myself headed off to Gisborne... Had an awesome time at Gisborne..staying on Waikanae bch front..and also spent a bit of time hanging with the crew from Surfboards Gisborne..Jim Croskery rings a bell (whom i knew from a Queensland trip) and Benny Hutchings from Bondi..a 'clubbie-surfie'!

We then hitch-hiked to Wellington via New Plymouth..... Staying at a place called "The Castle' in New Plymouth (sort of a surfie hang-out house....like the infamous Maunu rd digs)..then to Wellington and the 'Oriana' to sydney...The Oriana was most surfers chosen source of trans-tasman travel then!!

Lived at 'Legs' mums home for a couple of months in Punchbowl Sydney Every weekend we would head down the coast for a surf with a few of legs mates....here's one!!....John Blair...i was amazed how these so called average Sydney western suburbs surfers were so good..they just ripped!!

Sydney western suburbs boy 'Roul' These guys had such good wave sense....and were heaps of fun to go away with...awesome times!!...we would often surf Ulladulla and Green Island...very cool waves!!

and we sure had the classic cars then too.... 'Legs'board leaning against our resident 'woody'....beautiful!!...

but of course...most of us got a green FJ Holden....100 bucks..and it went forever... sweeeet surf wagons....

in fact, theirs my FJ on the right... A classic winters day at Noosa ...1968....water 23 degrees...air 23 degrees....beeautiful!!!!

around Easter we headed on down to Bells for the '68 Bells contest...the mystro..Wayne Lynch 'legs'..'tub'(legs bro) Bob, myself, Bill Carson & Al McIntosh headed off to Bells Bch to see the action..we sat on the bank & watched Wayne do this turn..they were talking 7ft boards then(see caption)..this photo taken by my good friend Barry Sutherland!

65 yr old Barry Sutherland surfing Bells...2008 So cool to see your old friends still surfing.....Barrys had a large chunk of his ear removed recently....some of the hazards of surfing our whole lives (sun spots)....i think he may have been in the same longboard club as Tui in Victoria!! ...very cool!

Barrys Photo gallery....he now lives on the Gold Coast ...so give him a 'hoy' if your up that way!!! Barry was a great surf photographer (www.watermarksphotogallery.com.au), and Peter Dunn (ex Waipu Cove grommet) Barry and myself would often surf together in WA and talk about the good old days in NZ and Aussie...cool fun times!!

and here's the legend himself...77 yr old Tui Wordley (bottom right) The Torquay (Victoria) Longboard club....and Tui still surfs ...and still helps out heaps in his club (see next photo)!!!!....awesome stuff!!

Still takin' photos at 77yrs old ...great stuff!! If you go to the Tatahi mags on the navigation bar,....you will see that Tui was doing heaps of stuff for that club too.... 48 yrs ago.....now thats impressive...a great man!!!

The water and days got so cold at Bells Bch...we decided to head up to Queensland... Was becoming a ritual for me now having spent the last 4 winters on the sunshine coast....but we were lookin' forward to those Noosa waves again!!......yahoo!!...Maroochydore here we come!!

Well...who's was the first face we saw when we arrived there..... Non other than Mr Dave T Boyd.....lookin' really happy to see us....ha!!

and the lovable Mr. Billy Player ....Noosa National Park...winter of '68 you could just park where-ever you wanted to then...on the grass ..didn't matter!!...awesome days!!

and the biggest lovable 'Grub' in history...John Black!! Auckland boy John...was the ultimate hippie life-stylist....he could live on 5 cents a day...sleep on the rocks...and still have a smile on his face every day....there's only ever been one John Black...awesome bloke!!...now who's that with him?....

and who could forget 'Red'...Mr Tony Redmond... Tony was like a big kid...he just loved the action....every time you turned around ...there was Tony...swishing his big golden locks back every 5 seconds.... i flatted with him in Remuera Auckland for a few months...he just loved the surf culture!!

The cheeky grin of Mr.Mike Tinkler.....son of 'Bob' Mike and Bob were such a tight-knit combination....Bob (his older brother...ha!..) was operating as Mikes manager...so he would inform us...well...regardless of the theatrics..they were the best of friends which speaks a lot...and Mike did surf well!!

Mike Tinkler Alexandra Headlands ...Sept '68 Alex Headlands can be a beautiful wave..and was our 'most surfed' wave each winter by us Kiwi regulars!!

mike on a fairly sizeable day at Angourie.... Most of us dropped into all the different spots up the coast when we went to Aussie in the 60's....i remember staying at Angourie in some cool old blokes cabin with other surfers!!! very groovy time...Ha!

we would often end up surfing an empty Lennox Heads.... and often an empty Byron Bay just up the road...very cool times!!...

in contrast...this is what it was like in Malibu in 1968... Man...we sure got the best of it all!!!!!....would often only be us guys out at Ti Tree at 3-4 ft in the mid 60s.....sweeeet!!

and so...(as was the norm then)...we all pitched in and got a house to live in...Moroochydore winter There would be often be a dozen of us living in a house to make it cheaper...you probably did the same!!!!.....i remember living here with guys from Gisborne...and a lot of south Island boys...as well as heaps of Auckland boys of course!!!!

There's that Boyd character again.... & looks like Mike Cooney (maybe) on left...& Billy Player..Alexander Headlands...our winter hangout!!....was also about now that Billy Carson turned us on to Chris Farlowe (singer)..."Man..have you guys heard that song by Chris Farlowe..awesome man"...Ha!

The Cotton Tree (Maroochydore) family ...winter of '68 Lorraine Collis (maybe)...'Spange' (South African Andy Spangler)...Mike Tinkler...'Brick' (from New Plymouth on ground)...Tony Redmond...Billy Player..Bob Hagner...John black...Billy Carson...Bob Tinkler...Dave Boyd...Mike Cooney..'legs' taking the photo!

Tea tree was the place we tended to surf the most...beautiful Tea tree Bay 1968 Thats probably either Billy Carson, Dave Boyd, John Black, Billy Player, Mike Cooney, or Mike and Bob tinkler out this day this photo was taken

National Park...Noosa...summer of '68 how nice and mellow does that look...no parking meters..no Rangers..park where you like!!!....awesome days...

Man i loved my Hayden board....got a Hayden every year i went over.... Bob McTavish was often the resident shaper there along with Bob Cooper and George Greenough...

Replica of my 1968 Hayden.... it was that sharpened fin that ripped my stomach open...man they were like razor blades...

The notorious Noosa camp ground where Brian King and myself fought off a million mozzi's .... Winter of '67

Alexandra Headlands surf club....summer of '68 We would often surf straight out in front of the surfclub...often had awesome peaks....

Sometimes we would head up to the Wappa dam at Nambour for a bit of fun... Coonskins and Legs...take the drop....

Contests in the 60s had 6 in a final like the '69 final here in New Plymouth.... Doug Hislop, Taff Kennings, Wayne Parkes, Allan byrne, Mike Court, and Mike Tinkler....probably the cream of NZ surfing at that time!!.....photo courtesy of that great book 'Gone Surfing' by Luke Williamson

and now its back to the Whangarei coast.........Comp moved from Pataua to Matapouri... Must have been a big swell!!

Ross Blomfield looking an awful lot like JohnBlomfield 'Peewee' as he was known..was a good surfer like his brother..and had a nice style...as you can see here!!

Ross doing a nice little cut-back...Northland junior champs!! Summer of '68...notice how the boards had got considerably shorter...harder rails, and far more maneuverable !!

Tui Northland Champs...summer of '68 Northern Advocate photos of that period...local industry and media gave us good coverage on those early days!!

The Northern Advocate said Mal Eggington...but i think its Brian King!! who do you think it is?....who-ever it is..their trimming nicely..with a bit of noticable speed!!...great photo!!

Regular Northern Advocate coverage of surfing around Whangarei!!! Notice we even had 'surf prospects' (for weekend surf conditions)....Dak..Trevor..and Sheldon..Colin..Ross..Tim..Ken..and Tui all get a mention!!

'Dak' Allan McDonald...Northland champs...summer of '68 Dak was not necessarily noted for his backhand attack..but was certainly noted for his radical forehand lay-back cut-backs...that sprayed everyone within 50ft of him including all the people on the beach and cars driving past...Ha!!

and this looks like that smooth goofy-footer...Nick Matich Nick was a really good surfer..Dargaville boy ...and travelled a bit.....i was surfing a break in Morroco in '72 and who should paddle out (unbeknown to me)....but Mr Nick Matich...was such fun times!!

1968 Northland champs...Mr Gary Orevich Great shot of Gary ...all concentration...doing a little re-entry!!

now this is a really good shot of Greg!! Greg Alach burying the rail....this photo also gives you a good look at the boards we were surfing on now...shorter..thinner boards!!!

Auckland boy Mark Wheeler at Pakiri....summer of '68 Mark on one of those thin-railed ...greenough fin (cutting edge) Peter Way boards....massive board changes taking place!!

Peter Dunn (Auckland boy) in Perth WA 1996 with the actual board that Wayne Parkes was riding in '67 ....this board still in good nick nearly 30 yrs later...notice how different boards were starting to look from just 18 months earlier!! .........'Dunny'..Peter Dunn was a regular to Waipu Cove in the late 60s!

Massive change on the clothing front too...... Northern Advocate April '68....We just wanted to wear jeans and t shirts all the time, but society thought that was inappropriate......Levi's and Lee jeans were becoming common surfie attire!!!

I think Jim Carney (on left) ....probably had the typical 1968 surf look! loose t-shirt and levi's...i remember how cool it was getting my first pair of Lee jeans...Ha!

and we were all starting to get that blonde surfy mop too around '68 My bro..Phil Cooney...tug of war at the Ruakaka surf club in '68.....surfers were recognized in those days also by their sun bleached blonde hair....some had a little liquid help as well!!! ..Ha!

on the way to Ocean beach 1968 Most of the coastal roads were still metal roads and most of the coastal towns were still little sleepy towns....Taurikura..Whangarei Heads 1968....awesome pleasant quiet little village!!

Ocean Beach 1968...looking tranquil!! the coastal region was still a little sleepy area in 1968...it wasn't until the 80s that real growth happened along our coastline and we lost some of that early day peaceful innocence!!

Winter of '68 And of course the biggest event for the year at Uretiti ...was the beaching of the rebel radio flagship 'Tiri' (Radio Hauraki)......we all scrambled down there for a good look!!

Ken & the boys take a trip up the coast...Teal Bay (Northland)...summer of '68 Ken Berrys (or Ken Harrisons) Plymouth..and John Blomfields brown Chrysler....how awesome are those cars (woodies)....if you know who's in the picture let me know!!!

another babe of the 60s ...Robin May.... won a nother pretty girl contest somewhere around Whangarei!!......in the 60s...the surfing community became more than just riding surfboards...it was cars, clothes, surf music, surf talk, lifestyle ...and for the boys...girls!!!...Ha!!

and of course there was this pretty lookin' gir..... ...oh ..wait a sec ...i think thats Reggie Ruka ...."oh sorry bro...forgot we all started growing long hair in '68"

that girl with the big glowing smile ...Patsy Enright... All the girls represented some sort of water sports in those days....

surf girls...16 yr old Michelle Flower (standing)..... and 15 yr old Pauline Cameron at Matapouri...summer of '68

Pauline with a new ..nice looking Atlas Woods..Matapouri 1968 Notice that boards were getting shorter and more maneuverable looking....interestingly the widest part of the board was nearer the back, which helped for higher performance, but made it a lot looser than what we were used to!!..

Jackie Mitchell showing good form at Pakiri...summer of '68 'Surfing in New Zealand' edition 1968.........Jackie lived a pretty commited surfing lifestyle..as did Northlands Pauline Pullman

Got an idea...this is one of the Monkhouse girls...perhaps Julie yes...got it right ...'Miss Pataua 1968........our favorite surf spot.. Pataua May 1968...
