The little Ahipara settlement 1913 No doubt they would have seen many a perfect wave peeling off the point......

and here it is ...called a holiday resort again...Ahipara 1913 Remember.... nearly all the Northland roads were still dirt or metal roads then....transport was mainly by horse and cart!!....

The road to Ahipara from Kaitaia 1910... would have been fun in the wet weather....remember those buggys had 4inch wide steal rims.......

in fact this is nearly 10 years later ..... main road in the Victoria Valley Kaitaia 1919.....roads were nothing more than mud holes!!!

The 'Forest Hall' breaks up from relentless west coast waves ...90 mile beach 1909 Crewmen salvage the leftovers....

Top end of 90 Mile beach...Mongonui bluff...1912 .. showing us some huge potential....and hardly ever surfed!!

Awesome Taipa rivermouth...summer of '62 had some awesome fun waves here in the mid-'60s...great set-up!!...

Taipa Beach '52....hardly even heard of in 1952 just north of Mongonui ...in the massive Doubtless Bay...

another great small wave set-up...Coopers Beach 1962 also had some great little waves here in the mid '60s...also had a good vib...bit like Waipu Cove

Taemaro Bay....just a little north of Paradise Bay..East coast..1939 What an awesome looking little bay area...(between Mongonui and Whangaroa...

Mongonui (east of Kaitaia)...'Steamer day'...1899.. The ship 'Clansman' made regular trips to places like Mongonui..they would have a special 'Steamers day' when locals would congregate at the wharf for supplies & newcomers..remember an overland trip to Auckland then(horse & cart)took several months.

The 'Apanuiaa' ..(Northern Steam Ship vessel)... Negotiating up the Awanui river...'pretty impressive'...1930

...slush track (road) in the Herekino Valley..1930 A bunch of politicians and dignatries taking a tour around the north to brag on all the progress...Ha!!

Paihia 1965... some classic cars there......Rev Williams in 1830 said..."its Pai here" (good here)...hence 'Paihia'

Long Beach..Russell 1959.. I could imagine this place getting a good wave on a big swell...a few little reefs here and there...

Pretty nice lookin spot isn't it...Long bch Russell..1950 could certainly have some sweet waves on a big swell....

Hokianga Heads...heading out to the beach for a surf...Ha!...1929 ..i think their ...ahh ..kinda bogged..Ha!!

1902 Hokianga Harbour...and the lifeboats off the sunken ship Ventnor.. 515 people went to the bottom.........fortunately 499 were corpses going in coffins back to China...ha!!

The unchanging Whale Bay....1764 ..actually the photo was taken in 1959 but may as well have been 1764...it would have looked just like this!!.....

Kamo 1963...and one of the original buildings...the Kamo pub... ..The first thing you build in a town is a pub..Ha!!...Station road goes off to the left...3 mile bush rd to the right....

Anyone remember this place.....Ha!! 63 Maunu road...the grand old daddy of many a hippie party, and home to many a surf bum of the 60s &70s....bit like the New Plymouth infamous 'Castle'....you probably remember 'digs' like this in your home town......

you see that little yellow circle ...well... .....this photo was taken in the summer of '71 and 'supersession had just started making boards in that little grey roofed house...Gant..Graham Allen....maybe myself and others were probably working in there when this photo was taken!!....

nov 1967 and we finally get a dedicated Post Office.....at the cost of $569,000... ......sheesh pretty cheep for a building like that!!!!.....in 1945 the Whangarei PO was still controlled by Auckland...

and here it is 9 months earlier .... all reclaimed swampland...amazing..glassworks in the background...

Cameron street 1963...and there's one of those classic old FJ Holdens...which were awesome cars... ...it was also around about this time that Tui was dragging people off up and down Cameron street in his topdressing truck...Ha!!

and of course ...rail was a big means of transport in those days.... Whangarei railway station...1945...the Northland rail-line was completed in 1925

Main intersection of Whangarei...looking very quiet..1942 looks like something out of an old wild west movie.....(the Bank dominating the whole street...Ha!!

Town Basin 1935....one day Hatea Drive is going to be there..Ha!!... about 30 years away!!.....you can see all small boats parked at the ship building yards, where eventually the Winter show building will be....

and this is what it looks like nearly 80 yrs on..... the barge in the last photo was about where those 2 blue (central ) buildings are...amazing!!

1935...maybe you can work this one out!!... they say its taken from lookout hill!!!.....it could be taken from Morningside!!

1932...there was a rail link from Whangarei across to Onerahi from 1911 to 1933...with a drawbridge! Ships used to dock at Onerahi then people would catch a train to Whangarei.....remember there was no rail-line to Auckland in 1920...& a road trip would take several days...actually probably weeks!!

1932 and the old AMP building on Bank Street.... funny how insurance buildings and banks were built like monuments...Ha!!

Whangarei 1933 ..population of 8,000... New rail-line runs thru the centre of town...AMP monument (building)bottom right of picture..

1928...just out of Whangarei...Parliamentary candidates chatting the locals... How amazing...everyones got a hat on ..Ha!!...the fashion of the 20s!!!...

1926...Walton Street bridge being built.... ..funny to think about where the photographer was taking this photo, was about where we sanded Supersession boards 45 yrs later!!....

Water Street railway bridge...1926... prior to this...the railway line was at road level with flashing lights and a level crossing....

in 1922...before the rail line....everything came by ship or seaplane ...there was no airport...rail-line or road to Auckland.....there was a track to Auckland but a return trip could take quite a few days..or weeks...

Onerahi 1921...no airport yet..just paddocks.. you can see the wharf on the left, which was a deepwater port for ships...passengers would catch a train on that wharf thru to Whangarei...
